WEEK 9 : Analogical Thinking

What is Analogical Thinking?

  • Analogical thinknig is what we do when we use information from one domain (the source or analogy) to help solve a problem in another domain (the target).
  • Experts often use analogies during the process of problem solving, and analogies have been involved in numerous scientific discoveries. However, studies of novice problem solvers show that they often have difficulty in recognising that one problem can be used to solve another.
For example....

For example, this top. This is not just an ordinary top. Below it has a figure like skirt so it's a combination of top + skirt which is equal to Peplum Dress.

Here is a pencil box comes with a sharpener compartment so you can just sharpen your pencils from it without having the need to use just the shrarpener to sharpen it.

Look how creative this is! A coke bottle + Tissue box. Together it would form a coke Bottle tissue box.

Feeling bored of the old boring basic alarm clock? Check this out! A gun laser alarm clock so when it rings, you just take the gun and shoot it to snooze it. Isn't that awesome? I would probably get myself this. So it's a gun + alarm clock = gun laser alarm clock.

Rubber band + Stick = Catapult

WEEK 8 : Making Faces

Making Faces. We were told to go outside and snap some pictures which you think it looks like a face. Something like this....
.
.
.

Taken from my school at Level 3. You will see the eyes and the small mouth below the window.

I love this picture as it really shows that angry face. The eyes are the 2 holes above the long window and the teeth is obviously the long window.

This is funny. I came across this 2 red dots. Not only that, there's leaves that makes the face look like a face.

After taking the picture above, I came across this. Windows which look like eyes, the trunk which looks like a long nose and a curvy branch which looks like a mouth! Superb!

I took this picture from this Internet as I find it cool!  It somehow looks like a fireplace.

faces everywhere 12 Faces everywhere (20 photos)

I couldn't managed to find sockets that make faces like this. I think this is the first time saw this picture which have faces in it.

faces everywhere 9 Faces everywhere (20 photos)

Last but not least, this house. If only the house can talk. We would all be shocked by it!

Week 7 : The Journey and Synesthesia

So what is Synesthesia?

According to the dictionary, " it is a condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. People who report such experiences are known as synesthetes. Recently, people are having difficulty in finding the definition of synesthesia,as many different phenomena have been covered by this term and in many cases the term synesthesia ("union of senses") seems to be a misnomer. A more accurate term for the phenomenon may be ideasthesia.

Something like this ....

You see, singers made explicit videos like this not for the heck of it. There are meanings behind those songs.
Tunnel Vision by Justin Timberlake.

While maintaining central vision, “tunnel vision” would be the effect of losing your peripheral view. Ideally, you’d be solely focused on whatever your eyes are looking directly at. JT uses the side effect as a metaphor to the girl of his dreams; he only sees her, regardless of whats around him.

Week 7 : The Journey and Synesthesia

This week's lesson we're going to learn about The Journey and Synesthesia. The first thing that Kelvin opened was this unrated video, Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke ft Pharell and T.I and I was like "Oh my god hahaha I don't usuallt watch this video with people lol!" So we had to draw anything that has got to do with this video. What does it mean/ What is the motive of the video etc. So i drew this :

Pretty censored I know, but who cares?! It's Art man!

I finally found out the meaning of the song..

Robin hates when girls act like they don’t want him even when he knows for sure that they do. They just want to blur the line that separates them.
And on a sexual level, “blurred lines” refers to girls being interested in casual and dirty sex but having to maintain the good girl image. The Madonna-Whore Complex is messed up.
Also, “blurred lines” refers to the moral ambiguity of flirting with a girl Thicke knows isn’t single. Even if she’s in a committed relationship she’s a “wild animal” with independent thought, and thus her significant other doesn’t own her, so is it really all that wrong?

Week 6 : Force Connection

I came across this artwork. I find it cool  because in the dark, the light will glow and you will see some sort like a country. Before the lights had been switched off, it's just an artwork will dots all over with us trying to figure it out what was the outcome.

Week 5 : Lateral Thinking

The solution is this. You have to move three balls to make the triangle point downwards instead of up. the solution... Like this...

Thinking laterally requires the abandonment of ordinary reasoning, thereby eliminating inhibitions. In other words, rather than making assumptions to decipher explanations, think abstractly to reveal alternate (and the actual) solutions!

Week 5 : Lateral Thinking

Thinking Outside the Box Game

In class, we were given this puzzle to solve. We have to draw lines to connect 9 dots without lifting your pen form the paper and without writing over a connection twice.

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Give up? Here's the answer.

After a few attempts of trying it, I still couldn't figure out the answer. So the solution is this.

Your exercise at lateral thinking makes you shy away from the usual line of thought to solve this puzzle.  Just like your muscles, the more you exercise your brain, the more robust it gets and the more primed it becomes for optimal performance.

Week 5 : Lateral Thinking

Impossible Paper Trick

At home, I tried a couple of puzzles burt unfortunately, I failed.  So this is the solution of solving this.

Firstly, start with a paper rectangle, any size, 9" x 6" is fine. Make two right-angle cuts to the exact centre on one long side, at 3" and 6". Make one right-angle cut to the exact centre on the other long side at 4.5". Lay the sheet flat, fold over the central flap making a neat hinge and fold it back.

Lift the sheet by the two short sides, with the flap away from you, and twist one of the L-shaped ends 180 degrees (half a full turn).

Lay the sheet flat again, and fold the flap down both ways to create a hinge. The flap should now be erect, with half of the cut-away on each side - which looks like an impossible construction. This is what you show your audience. Ask them to explain it.
Something like this

Week 5 : Lateral Thinking

A man and his son are in a car crash. The father is killed and the child is taken to hospital gravely injured. When he gets there, the surgeon says, 'I can't operate on this boy - for he is my son!!!' How can this possibly be?

Answer : The surgeon can not operate on her own son; she is his mother.

Week 5 : Lateral Thinking

Lateral thinking question samples that I got it from the net.

1. You are driving down the road in your car on a wild, stormy night, when you pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus:
1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
2. An old friend who once saved your life.
3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.
Knowing that there can only be one passenger in your car, whom would you choose?

Answer :
The old lady of course! After helping the old lady into the car, you can give your keys to your friend, and wait with your perfect partner for the bus.

Week 5 : Lateral Thinking

So today in class we learnt about Lateral Thinking? So what is that?

So basically Lateral Thinking is solving problems through an indirect and creative approach, using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step by step logic. It's like more thinking out of the box.

Who created Lateral Thinking? Edward Debono in 1967. It was first written up in a book called 'The Use of Lateral Thinking'. He has written over 40 books translated into 25 languages and has also made two television series aired around the world. He is the author of the famous thinking program used internationally to directly teach thinking in schools.

Lateral thinking is concerned not with playing with the existing pieces but with seeking to change those very pieces. Lateral thinking is concerned with the perception part of thinking. This is where we organise the external world into the pieces we can then process. The techniques of lateral thinking, such as provocation, are designed to help that change. This is another technical definition. It is important because it also defines the mathematical need for creativity.

Anyway I kind of take some of the texts from http://www.slideshare.net/akhanna78/lateral-thinking-by-edward-de-bono because i think it is useful to put it here for my Creative thinking class.

Week 4 : Mindmapping

LOVE

Today, we did Mind-mapping on Love. Love is a very strong word to me.. and to most people. Don't take love for granted. Don't tell them you love them when you don't mean it. Guys, if you love someone, tell them before it's too late. It's okay to get rejection, it's part of everyone's life. Hey, I got rejected once. At first I felt heartbroken but time will heal itself. Okay enough with my deep words. Love doesn't have to be BGR, it can be family, friends, teachers, pets and to something too. As you can see the pic above, it's half done. I've got to do more on love.

WEEK 3 : Brainstorming

Brainstorming? What's that?

Brainstorming is all about expanding your ideas creatively. It is done in a group. The goal is to find as many ideas and answers to a problem or question as possible. Sometimes people call it brainstorming when they sit down and think on their own, which is strictly speaking not the case. Before doing any brainstorming, we have to get some tips or techniques to get started.

Tips to get started :

Firstly, Use the 5W wisely : Who, Where, When, What and Why and How. For example, Who did this, Why did u do that, When did it happen, Why? How did it happen? After answering all that, then you propose solutions.
Secondly, Produce as much ideas as you can that is related to the topic you are doing. By that, this will help you to think more and expand even bigger.
Thirdly, It is OKAY to make mistakes. There is no right or wrong answers when it comes to brainstorming.

There are no bad ideas in brainstorming. Scientists found out that bad ideas motivate others to come across with their ideas. People that normally would not dare to propose a solution suddenly feel more confident if very bad ideas were posted in a brainstorming. So you see, even bad ideas are a good thing - at least in brainstorming.

Why are we strongly encouraged to use brainstorming being starting any essays/project work? It is because If you planned earlier, you can get more ideas to work out on what topic you will be doing. Spending an hour thinking of what to write, isn't brainstorming even better than having the need to sit down and stare at blank space? Although it is time consuming but still, you get some ideas in your head by just writing it down on a blank piece of paper.

WEEK 3 : Brainstorming

So today in Creative Thinking class, Kelvin taught us how to do Brainstorming. Among the 5 '100 ways to ....", me and my group members (Jannah, Xin Ru and Zoe) chose to do a brainstorming about 100 ways to send a message. At first we were like, "Okay.. how are we supposed to complete all 100 ways within 10 minutes it's impposible!" Ironically 10 minutes later, We have completed like 104 ways to send a message! Haha! Here's 100 ways to send a message(Tell me if it doesnt hit 100) :

- Social Networking

WEEK 2 : RULE BREAKERS IN THE WORLD.

WEEK 2 : RULE BREAKERS

The first rule breaker that I want to talk about is this Dutch designer, Zelda Beauchampet.
She is known for her unusual yet unique handscape ring design. The design features small individual rings that each have a different icon on top depending on the position of the rings different landscapes are created.
The rings come in present arrangements or the user can pick their favourite three icons and make their own personal handscape. She is the rule breaker because of her rings that amazed some people.
She is the definition of creative. Among all the rings that designers made,
I think this hand scape ring is one of a kind!

The next rule breaker would be Marcel Duchamp. He's not just an artist but an artist associated with Cubism, Dadaism and Surrealism. He is a rule breaker because of his work which is characterized by its humour, the variety and unconventionality of its media, and its incessant probing the boundaries of art.
Fountain is one of his most famous works and is widely seen as an icon of 20th century art.
He saw something meaningful in the fact that their world was gaining many new useful objects.
A way of showing this was to regard a useful object as a significant one. In this case, the art community uplifted a urinal into an artwork.

The third rule breaker is Verner Panton is a rule breaker known for his outre plastic chairs and his psychedelic interior designs.
He focused more on the simple, logical and the use of natural materials. Imaginative, innovative he expressed himself with artificial, colours  fulled of patterns.
Eventhough his designs are hard to understand, the chair is the world's first single-piece plastic chair.
Although he did not win a prize, it foresees the future essence of the Panton Chair with it's S-shaped form.

The fourth rule breaker would be Vincent Van Gogh. His paintings show a sense of passion and tranquility the way of him using colours. Among his paintings, I like his Starry Night painting as he uses strokes of paintbrush to paint the night sky. Although the features are exaggerated, this is a scene I can relate to, and also one that most people feel comfortable and at ease with. The sky keeps my eye moving about the painting, following the curves and creating a visual dot to dot with the stars. His way of painting really shows the reflection of the turbulence of his soul.

The fifth rule breaker would be Madonna. I can say that she's one of the most famous female rule breakers because of her style and glamour. The wedding dress of a "virgin," the crucifixes and Kabbalah bracelets, the bustier, the bared bosom, the bitchiness and bravado, the truths, the dares--Madonna never met a button she didn't push. At 54, the supremely buff, indefatigable Madge can easily outdance, upstage, and outshine any ingenue. Incomparable icon of pop culture remains a legend in her own time.

I'm sure many of you have heard about this fellow on the left. Yes, he's none other than the musician rapper Eminem a.k.a Marshall Mathers. Born on October 17, 1972 at St Joseph Missouri. Can I say that he's the world's famous rapper? He released The Marshall Mathers LP, which was noted as the fastest-selling album in rap history in the 2000! Back into his chilhood days he was having a rough time.  He had no close friends, kept almost entirely to himself and was treated like an outcast at each new school.
Got bullied in the bathroom, school lockers. In high school, he failed his 9th Grade three times and eventually dropped out at the age of 17.
Despite being a poor student, Eminem always had a deep affinity for language, devouring comic books and even studying the dictionary. As a teenage dropout, Eminem found a way to express his passion for language, as well as to release his youthful anger, through the emerging musical genre rap!
At first i think his songs are about sex etc but as years goes by he started to write songs about his life exprience like 'Im not Afraid', 'Beautiful'. He also write a song for his daughter ; 'MockingBird'. Eventhough there's lots of corse language in it, I believed he wrote that to express himself.
I think that he's one of the rule breakers because there was this time where he went under rehabilation. By early 2008, he had managed to kick his addictions to drugs and alcohol and returned to recording music.
He released his first album of new music in five years, Relapse, in 2009, featuring the singles "Crack a Bottle" and "Beautiful."

In 2010, Eminem released another album, Recovery, a highly autobiographical attempt to come to terms with his struggles with addiction and experience with rehabilitation. I really look up to him despite on how much pain and pressure he went through but he managed to stay strong. He inspired me when I was 12 and I've learnt on how hard life is, never give up.

Last but not least, Frida Kahlo. She has always wanted to become a doctor but ever since she met with a bus accident, she started painting instead. During her days, she had overcome obstacles like meeting with an accident which turned her to become an artist, getting divorced.
like her painting 'Self Portrait with Necklace of Thorns'. It portrays a picture of her in a frontal pose.
In Mexican folk tradition, dead hummingbirds were used as charms to bring luck in love, but she painted a black cat on her left shoulder to symbolize bad luck and death waiting to pounce on the humming bird.
The thorns digging into her neck are symbolic of the pain she still feels over her divorce from Diego.
All this had made her became wiser and expressed herself through painting, despite her traumatizing accidents and obstacles. Her deep introspection has influenced many artists to do the same.
Not only did she paint through Surrealism but she did her own reality and experiences.
Overall, the reason why she painted many self-portraits stemmed from her loneliness and that she was the person she knew best.

Week 1 : Introduction to Creative Writing

WHAT IS CREATIVE THINKING?

Creative thinking is the ability to create something by developing and combining ideas that are unique, useful and worthy of further elaboration to form an art. You have to be creative to think creatively especially artists, inventor, designer etc. Actually we humans are creative in our own individual way. Creativity is the form of bringing imaginary ideas into reality. Firstly, you think and then you produce it. When our imagination gets wild, that's where you will get all the creativity from.

However, creativity is not just the use of your imagination, it is the use of your imagination followed by the act of creation. Having great ideas and thoughts is not enough to be creative, without producing, great ideas and thoughts alone would be just being imaginative.

For example, I drew leaves. When I come to think of it, drawing leaves is just too plain and dull. So I decided to use my creative skills. What should I develop from the leaf? Roots? Leaf patterns maybe?

So yes, I literally developed my leaves into leaf patterns. See how I use my imagination yet creativity to develop such ideas? There you go by the definition and examples of creative thinking.

I agreed with Charles Mingus' quote because different humans have different form of creativity and imagination. Even if you think simple, by developing that 'simple' idea into an awesomely simple, that's where you are creative.
